A pipe burst around 1 p.m. at the Galesburg Public Library on the second floor of the building, causing an evacuation of the building.
Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins says that a hot water pipe from the boiler inside an air handling unit burst, causing water to leak through the first floor ceiling.
Service crews have been called in to clean up significant leakage, however Simkins says it’s uncertain as to how much water still sits on top of the suspended first floor ceiling.
Currently crews are assessing damage to materials.; they reportedly covered a section of books and video materials with tarps. Simkins says crews have been able to channel water from the leak into drains.
Damages have closed the library for the remainder of the day. They will reportedly re-open around noon tomorrow.
