YORKVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A judge has handed down a 53-year prison sentence to a convicted sex offender who was found in a hidden room in a northern Illinois house while on the run.
Forty-year-old Shawn T. Lipsey was sentenced Thursday. In November, he was convicted on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and was let go on bail while he awaited a January sentencing.
But authorities say Lipsey removed a GPS tracker he wore and failed to show at the January hearing. He was taken into custody March 10 after a raid by a SWAT unit at his wife’s Newark home, where authorities say he was found inside a specially constructed room with a fake wall.
The (Aurora) Beacon-News reports Lipsey maintained his innocence in a written court statement and said his hiding “was the act of a cornered animal.’
