City Council to Debate Community Center Plans Once Again This Evening

1-20-15 Galesburg City CouncilGalesburg City Council members are expected to discuss an on-going debate once again tonight, regarding the naming of a city community center.

Council Members voted two weeks ago, in favor of naming the Boys & Girls Club of Knox County as the center, however, due to alderman absences the vote of 3-2 fell short, needing an additional vote to pass the motion. The action was then tabled for a second straight meeting.

Debate has continued for weeks, as to whether or not the Boys & Girls Club should be the sight chosen as the center.

This evening will be the first meeting for incoming Ward 1 Alderman Angela Bastian, who recently beat out Ken Goad for the seat. Even if the item is tabled again tonight, Bastian could provide a deciding vote one way or another.

Aldermen have also discussed naming the Broad Street Armory as a possible choice for the center. The cost to renovate the facility is projected to cost $500,000–council members have currently allocated $115,000 in funds for the project due to the sale of the cities previous center.

Meanwhile, a vote is expected to take place regarding the building of a new 13-home subdivision on Lincoln Park Drive.

The project is in response to a push to build new single-family housing within the city. Council members recently set aside $1Million for prospective builders as a part of its Urban Development Action Grants fund.
