History Professor Named Interim SIU-Edwardsville Chancellor

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) –A longtime history professor at Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville will be the school’s interim chancellor.

The school says 67-year-old Stephen Hansen will fill the role during the school’s year-long search for a permanent chancellor. Former Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe’s resignation took effect Friday. She said in June that she was leaving to work at Chippewa Valley Technical College in Wisconsin.

Hansen said he doesn’t intend to apply for the position permanently. Hansen says he wants the campus to “strengthen its already-strong reputation for excellence.”

SIU President Randy Dunn is already filling in as Carbondale-campus chancellor because of a death in November. SIU Board of Trustees chairman Randal Thomas said officials have intentionally structured their search so they’re not looking for two chancellors at once.
