Government Concedes Mistake in Schock Document Release

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The government has acknowledged that there was no “leak” of documents in a federal investigation of former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Bass filed notice Monday that federal officials inadvertently filed documents intended to be sealed that were briefly available to the public on Aug. 10.

The documents were produced as part of hearings in July before U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough over a motion to hold Schock in civil contempt for failing to produce records sought in grand jury subpoenas.

Federal prosecutors are investigating the Peoria Republican for improper spending and other alleged abuses before he resigned from Congress in March.

Myerscough had scheduled a videoconference Tuesday over the alleged leak. Bass says in his notice that is now unnecessary.
