Revised Knoxville Budget Still Has Surplus

Knoxville School District LogoKnoxville School Board members approved a final budget for the next fiscal year earlier this week.

District 202 Superintendent Steve Wilder says the district will still see a surplus, which now consists of a little more than $243,000.

In July, the board approved a tentative budget with a surplus of just over $324,500.

Wilder tells WGIL, that there were some changes that took place after that meeting took place.

“There is always some revisions between the tentative budget in July, and by the time we get to approve it in September,” says Wilder. “We have added a couple of small projects to the budget and we have also revised our salary and benefit figures. We did have some late hires this year. We just make sure we get all of those sorts of things right. It’s just little fluctuations here and there, but it all adds up to change the predicted surplus a bit.”

Wilder says he continues to caution the board about spending any surplus money, as the state could still cut education funds as a part of mending the impasse.

Wilder has advised the board that he believes the district should send surplus money back into reserves to help pay back what was taken out during last year’s budget deficit.
