Crews Tend to Hazardous Chemical Spill Near Route 34

WGILNewsIcon200pxIllinois State Police Officials say a hazardous chemical spilled overnight near Route 34 on 87th Street in Warren County.

Trooper Dan Hill says ferrous sulfate is being cleaned up by environmental crews. Hill says no threat to the public is evident. The spill was the result of a semi trailer crash that took place shortly after 12:30 a.m.

72-year-old John Eigner of Wisconsin, the driver of the truck, reportedly lost control when he reached down to get a drink.

The truck crossed into the median, traveling Westbound into the Eastbound lanes and into a south ditch.

Police say the trailer became uncoupled when the trailer spilled its load.

Hill says traffic on 34 has not been affected, and that the majority of the spill took place on 87th street where crews continue cleanup.

Monmouth Police, Monmouth Firefighters and the Galesburg Hospitals’ Ambulance service all assisted at the scene.
Eigner was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, violation of the 14 hour driving rule, and not having a current log.
