Maquon woman dead in third weekend fatality

The Knox County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that a Maquon woman was killed yesterday as the result of a crash on Highway 20 about four miles west of Maquon.

20-year-old Shelby A. Strang was killed when the pickup truck she was driving collided with another pickup truck pulling a dual-tank trailer of anhydrous ammonia.

26-year-old Matthew L. Goedke of Elmwood was the driver of that truck headed westbound, when the two vehicles side-swiped near the crest of a hill. Strang’s truck then crashed into one of the tanks, although no chemical was spilled.

Strang was pronounced dead at the scene, and Goedke was transported to OSF St. Mary Medical center where he was treated for unknown injuries.

Illinois State Police, and the Maquon and Abingdon Fire Departments both assisted at the scene. The accident took place at approximately 7:38 a.m. yesterday morning.
