Murder charges filed, $5M bond in Quincy beating death

QUINCY, Ill. (AP) — A western Illinois man is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in a Quincy beating death.

Police say 29-year-old Derek McKenzie used his fists and a metal clamp to fatally beat 48-year-old Billy Graham during a Monday altercation. McKenzie was officially charged during a Tuesday hearing. McKenzie’s bond was set at $5 million. Prosecutors say the attack wasn’t random and that Graham and McKenzie knew each other.

Chief Public Defender Holly Henze was assigned to McKenzie. The Quincy Herald-Whig reports McKenzie refused to stand during the hearing and refused to fill out an affidavit usually required for those who seek an Adams County public defender.

An autopsy was planned Tuesday on Graham. McKenzie is next due in court Thursday.
