Roads closed, flood warnings issued after Illinois storm

PEORIA, Ill. (AP) — Flood warnings were in effect across central and southern Illinois a day after a winter storm brought sleety, icy rain to the state.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday morning had flood warnings issued for areas including Champaign, Charleston, Effingham, Taylorville and Salem. Major flooding was observed along the Kankakee, Illinois, Sangamon and Vermilion rivers.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reported several closed roadways due to weather in southern Illinois. Those included Interstate 70 near Pleasant Mound and roadways along the Mississippi River near Chester.

The Monday storm brought 3.5 inches of ice in Rockford and had wind gusts of 53 mph in Waukegan.

Ameren Illinois reported about 23,000 power outages, largely in the Galesburg and Peoria area, on Tuesday. Chicago’s airports reported about 270 cancelations.
