For more than 20 years, Galesburg residents have celebrated MLK Day with a community meal and this year is no exception.

The annual King Day breakfast on Monday will take place at the First Baptist Church starting at 7:30 a.m.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee member Maury Lyon says a number of activities alongside good food are set for Monday’s event.

Lyon tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL that this years guest speaker is..

“Tianna Cervantez from Knox College is going to be speaking,” Lyon says. “We expect something good from her, she is doing a very fine job and we are glad she agreed to participate.”

Cervantez, is also a District 205 School Board member. Lyon says the top two finalists of a middle school essay contest will be featured as well.

“We do an essay contest and this year we got responses from three of the middle schools in town–Churchill, Lombard and Costa, so we had good response to it.”

Tickets for the breakfast are $6 for adults and $4 for children. The event is designed so that individuals needing to get to work can celebrate King’s legacy all while completing their day. Festivities are expected to conclude around 9 a.m.
