Volunteer activities planned in Illinois for MLK holiday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Painting, cleaning and restocking food pantries are some of the volunteer activities planned throughout Illinois on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Gov. Bruce Rauner has proclaimed Monday a “Day of Service” in Illinois to remember the legacy of the fallen civil rights leader.

People interested in volunteering can visit the website Serve.Illinois.gov to find more than 20,000 volunteer opportunities in Illinois and neighboring states. Volunteers can search based on their location or area of interest.

The state’s volunteerism commission is accepting nominations for the annual Governor’s Volunteer Service Awards. The awards recognize individual volunteers and businesses that support community service. The awards honor people who provide service to the state and highlight the importance of volunteerism and community service in Illinois. Nominations are due by Jan. 29.
