Thrushwood Farms Quality Meats of Galesburg can now call their selection of meat products internationally acclaimed.

The Galesburg business submitted nine entries for consideration to the IFFA, an international quality meat competition run by the DFV, or Germany Butcher’s Association.

Due to stringent European Union restrictions on transferring meat from non-EU countries, DFV, partnered with the American Association for Meat Processors to hold a competition in Madison, Wisconsin to allow American meat processors to participate.

Thrushwood’s nine entries were judged by German master butchers with all nine winning medals including four gold, four silver and a bronze.

Vice President of Operations at Thrushwood Doug Hankes tells WGIL the recognition is especially sweet because they won with products that came right off their shelves.

“These products are all available at our store,” Hankes says. “It’s pretty neat to know that here in Galesburg, Illinois we were able to compete in something international and do extremely well. It’s really neat to know that this stuff is made right in Galesburg by families in Galesburg.”

The awarded selections include gold medals for smoked turkey, snack stick teriyaki and bone-in ham.

“The bone-in ham was actually out for sale in our meat case and I grabbed it, put it in the cooler and it was good enough to win a gold medal.”

Thrushwood Farms has been in business nearly 40 years.
