County Building Committee finds solution to chilly courthouse

It’s a been a chilly winter at the Knox County Courthouse.

Several sections of the building had experienced colder than comfortable temperatures prompting employees to bring in space heaters.

Sheriff David Clague told workers to put an end to the plug in heaters until he realized that even though the HVAC system was in working order certain rooms were noticeably cooler than what they should be.

Building Committee Co-Chair Greg “Chops” Bacon tells WGIL that HVAC manufacturers and engineers toured the building including Mechanical Services Incorporated and Daikin Manufacturers with Cody Basham of Klinger and Associates and Committee Co-Chair George Knapp.

“They took a tour of the courthouse, looked at things and George was there representing the committee, the Sheriff was there, Cody was there– so we’re aware of the few problems and we’re trying to work through them,” Bacon says.

The problem it turns out was the wall sensors were too high up giving the system an inaccurate reading of the temperature as it effects people on the ground.

Because installation remains under the manufacturers warranty, the sensors will be moved down the wall at no cost.

In other business Bacon is preparing a presentation for the full board’s February meeting to make members aware of the needed repairs to the courthouse, so they’ll support the committee’s proposal to take $1 per ton from the landfill.
