522 overall wins, 14 Invitational tournament championships and a second place Class A State Tournament finish in 1976–those are just a few of the accolades of last night’s guest of honor at ROWVA High School.

Longtime ROVA coach Bob Meredith had the school’s gymnasium named for him yesterday. Meredith coached at Leroy High School starting in 1963. From 1970 to 1993 he than coached the Tigers, and it’s safe to say he was well received by the school.

Amidst handshakes and smiles from former players, fans and friends, Meredith told WGIL he’s humbled by the recognition.

“It’s really tremendous, something I never expected and something that come as a surprise to me. It’s a real honor and a privilege. I’m going to remember it for a long time.”

And what does Meredith think about the school?

“I told my wife if something happens to me, just tear up the floor and put my ashes underneath it.”

The dedication stems from a recent District 208 School Board decision to name the gym as well as the school’s baseball field, which will be named for coach John Clark who passed away last year.
