Troopers step up highway enforcement for prom, graduation

ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — Troopers with the Illinois State Police in District 2 have a reminder for young drivers during prom and graduation season.

They want them to think about the safety message in the word “PROM” and “Please Return on Monday.” That means celebrating responsibly and not drinking and driving.

State troopers will be aggressively enforcing speeding violations and looking for distracted and intoxicated drivers. They’ll be looking for seat belt violations too.

The Illinois Department of Transportation reported 135 teenagers died last year in traffic crashes in Illinois. Factors contributing to teenage deaths in motor vehicles include not wearing a seat belt, speed, distraction, impaired driving and lack of experience.
