Gale Elementary are grand prize winners in a promotional event with the St. Louis District Dairy Council.

The Council’s Wake Up to Dairy campaign invited schools to decorate their cafeteria with provided signs and props and to take pictures of students enjoying milk with breakfast.

Through Illinois and Missouri schools 750 schools in 131 counties participated but it was Galesburg’s own Gale Elementary that was drawn as the grand prize winner.

Nutrition Educator with the SLDC Monica Nyman came to Gale on Thursday to deliver a gift basket to the cafeteria staff along with student prizes.
Nyman tells WGIL that the council’s school promotion was tied to a week long event started by the School Nutrition Association.

“Every March we do celebrate National School Breakfast Week,” Nyman says. “Of course dairy is a part of that so we always like to reward some of our local schools for participating in our promotions.”

National School Breakfast week ran from Mar. 7-11 this year.

Nyman says that to the best of her knowledge this is the first time a Galesburg school has won this prize.
