Champaign fires police officer facing sexual assault cases

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — A city official in Champaign say a police officer facing sexual assault charges has been fired.

Assistant Director of Human Resources Amanda Farthing tells The News-Gazette that Jared Gale was fired Wednesday.

According to a letter from police Chief Anthony Cobb to Gale, the 32-year-old was fired for violating department conduct policies and because the bond restrictions from his criminal cases leave him unable to perform his job.

Gale attorney Evan Bruno declined comment.

Gale has pleaded not guilty to criminal sexual assault and aggravated domestic battery in cases involving two women in Champaign County in 2013 and 2014.

Gale was hired as a Champaign police officer in 2012.
