This week the Discovery Depot Children’s Museum turns 20.

A week full of celebratory fun is planned for the Galesburg tourist attraction.

Today, the Depot will be open from 12 to 7 p.m. and admission will be thrown back to the entry price the Depot had the day it opened: $2.50.

Then on Wednesday, visitors can decorate and indulge in cupcakes. That will be the same day Illinois Tourism Director Corey Jobe will take a tour of Galesburg tourists hotspots and do a press conference at 4 p.m. at the Depot.

Depot Director Denise Bradburn tells WGIL part of what Jobe will touch on is the impact of tourism on the local and state economy.

“Discovery Depot is one of the top tourist attractions in Knox and Warren counties,” she says. “So, we’re bringing tourists in every day to the Galesburg area and having that economic impact.”

Thursday admission is half priced on a day when kids will be able to engage in science experiments ranging from making elephant toothpaste to Diet Coke and Mentos explosions.

“Discover Depot in the beginning was a museum that offered a lot of hands-on science and experiments, so we’re recognizing that part of our history,” Bradburn says.

Bradburn also says the water exhibit expected to open in 2017 is in its preliminary design stages, adding that 70 percent of funds have been raised.
