Yesterday the Discovery Depot celebrated their 20th anniversary.

As a part of a week long slate of events to mark the occasion Illinois Tourism Director Corey Jobe spoke at the Depot to stakeholders and local officials.

He touched on new marketing campaigns to advertise the state including enjoyillinois.com which launches today.

Jobe told the crowd that the average tourist wants to go home with a story to tell about experiencing a local culture.
The tourism director had kind words to say about both the traditionally thought of tourist destinations in Galesburg as well the current downtown.

“I was truly impressed with what’s happening in downtown Galesburg,” Jobe said. “It’s exciting to see the local entrepreneurs doing good things.”

As far as Discovery Depot, Jobe said the attendance numbers are “unbelievable.”

He did have suggestions of how the economic impact of the children’s museum could be maximized, particularly those traveling via Amtrak.

“There’s not a lot of convenient things right here near, so when the train stops or people are waiting for the train there is nowhere to get an ice cream or something like that quickly,” Jobe added. “I do see a lot of opportunity in the area for that too.”

Also yesterday, the first ever Discovery Depot Legacy Award was given to President and CEO of F&M Bank, Doug Sanders for his dedication and service to the museum.
