The Knox County Board voted last night to give the offices of County Recorder and Coroner a 1 percent per year raise over the next four years.

The decision did draw some conversation, however, as this is less than the raise other elected county officials including the sheriff, county clerk, circuit clerk, and treasurer received in 2014.

The board by statute has to set the election officials’ salaries 180 days before they assume office and this is an election year for the recorder and coroner.

In 2014, board members voted in favor of a base salary increase of $1,300 for the clerk, circuit clerk and treasurer and $1,500 for the sheriff with increases over their four year term of 1.5, 2, 1.5 and 1.5 percent.

According to the county’s FY15-16 budget, those offices have seen a 13.3% increase in salary over the last five years, while the recorder and coroner have seen a 10.3% increase.

County Recorder Carol Hallam noted that she is already the lowest paid full time elected official in the county and it makes her feel like her job “doesn’t count.”

Member Cheryl Nache initially thought the lower raise was unfair for these offices to get less of a raise than the other elected officials but the dire state of county finances changed her mind.

“I will say ‘no money no fun,’ but I’m sorry, that’s what it stands to be,” Nache said.

County Clerk Scott Erickson also drew for which political party will appear at the top of county ballots for this fall’s general election.

Democratic candidates will appear at the top.
