This Sunday will be the pinnacle of 303 students’ academic careers in District 205.

Galesburg High School will graduate the Class of 2016 in the school auditorium at 4 p.m.

Of the 303 students receiving diplomas this weekend, 257 are GHS students, 46 of them GHS North.

GHS Registrar Connie Stephan says the importance of graduation is that it recognizes the hard work of all seniors.

“We have award assemblies and things like that where our top students are acknowledged, but this to me kind of incorporates all the students, whether you’re top student or a middle student or average student,” Stephan says. “Everyone gets acknowledged.”

Chosen by the seniors, English teacher Laurie Aten will be the speaker representing the faculty.

Seniors Sara Saey, Nathan Puthenveetil and Jensen Rehn will be the student speakers.

The class of 2016 is slightly smaller, 20 more graduated in 2015.

This year’s ceremony also marks a turning point in District 205 leadership as this will be the last GHS graduation for Principal Roy Van Meter whose resignation is effective June 30 and the first for Superintendent Ralph Grimm.

This Sunday is also graduation for ROWVA and Monmouth-Roseville High Schools.

ROWVA will commence at 3 p.m. and Monmouth-Roseville at 1 p.m.
