Galesburg High School Athletic Director Jeff Flater says there’s a sense of urgency about replacing the Thiel Gym floor but he can’t say for sure when it will be ready.
Flater met with Kiefer Flooring in northern Illinois today following straight line winds July 10 that blew off a protective covering and exposed the gym floor to water, causing it to roll and warp.

District 205 and the contractors working on the roof’s insurance companies are working to come to a “quick resolution,” according to a district news release.

Flater tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL with volleyball season soon approaching they’re making adjustments until Thiel has a new floor.

“We need to push ahead, get a renovation company in there and start ripping the floor out, drying the floor, drying the concrete and obviously putting the new floor in,” Flater says. “So obviously there’s a sense of urgency and I think everyone appreciates that and is trying to work as quickly as possible.”

He goes on to say Streaks games will likely take place in the GHS fieldhouse for at least part of the fall.

There’s no seating for crowds in the fieldhouse, so Flater has reached out to bleacher companies.

For now the athletic director says he’s “going to school” learning about the different options in flooring.

He estimates it’s been around 20 years since Thiel Gym’s floor was replaced.
