Chicago ERs prepping for intoxicated Lollapalooza teenagers

CHICAGO (AP) — A hospital not far from this weekend’s Lollapalooza music festival is prepping for an influx of intoxicated teenagers.

Lurie Children’s Hospital held a simulation last week to prepare for its busiest weekend of the year for alcohol-related visits. The hospital is about a mile and a half north of Grant Park, where tens of thousands of people attend the yearly music festival.

Dr. Karen Mangold says medical personnel at the hospital are expecting even more patients this year because Lollapalooza has expanded to a four-day event instead of three days.

The Chicago Tribune reports that last year emergency rooms across Chicago treated 88 intoxicated teenagers during Lollapalooza. That’s down from 2014 but still nearly nine times higher than an average weekend.

Lollapalooza runs from Thursday through Sunday.
