Galesburg City Council will meet in a work session tonight to continue discussion on budget reduction.

City Manager Todd Thompson says the deficit still sits around $1.9 million for FY17.

Tonight, aldermen will hear an annual review of city rates, fees and revenues, and how they impact the budget.

While tonight’s meeting will be largely informational, Thompson tells WGIL that budget reduction recommendations and more aren’t far away.

“We’ll return to specifics about how we’re going to address the deficit and I’ll make recommendations, probably in the September meeting,” Thompson says. “Then we’ll talk about capital improvement projects at the August work session.”

Thompson adds that a budget draft should come in October so that council can adopt a full budget by December.

“So then we’ll have October, November and December to review the proposed budget and make decisions,” Thompson says.

Before the adoption, council will have to figure out one of it’s biggest decisions–how to fund police and fire pensions. Tonight’s work session starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Erickson Conference Room at City Hall.
