CHICAGO (AP) — A Cook County judge will hear arguments next month in a lawsuit brought by social service providers over the impact of the yearlong state budget impasse.
The hearing is Aug. 31.
Nearly 100 social service groups sued Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration saying they worked without payment during the stalemate and are owed roughly $160 million. They call themselves the Pay Now Illinois coalition and want the court to force payment.
Rauner has said he understands the groups’ frustrations. An early education organization led by his wife, Diana Rauner, is among the groups suing.
The coalition claims a partial spending plan lawmakers approved isn’t enough. In a Monday court filing, the group says they face “financial catastrophe.” Many providers have already cut back services and staff. Some have closed their doors.
