Knoxville Superintendent Steve Wilder is tentatively projecting a surplus in the district’s next year budget.
Wilder cautioned in a document presented to board members last night that he expects some small changes between now and September, when the final budget will need approval.

The operations budget, which doesn’t include any capital or construction projects, is at a surplus of $142,515.

The overall budget takes into account a $450,000 expenditure for HVAC work at Mable Woolsey Elementary and revenue of $2.1 million in the form of an expected reimbursement from the state for construction of the high school.

Surplus for the FY17 overall budget is about $1.7 million.

District 202’s finances are benefiting from additional General State Aid from last year, a tax levy that went up 4.98 percent and increasing property values.

Wilder tells WGIL it’s a long way to June though and it’s not uncommon to see state slashing of funds in the middle of the year.

“I expect there’s going to be a lot of action after the general election in November here in Illinois once the legislature gets seated,” Wilder says. “So, we’ll just sit back and see how it goes, but for now the operating budget looks pretty good.”

The school board did approve a bid for HVAC installation from MSI Engineers.

MSI was one of three companies to submit a bid but at $450,000 it was about $150,000 less than the other two entries.
