Dennis Hastert’s prison release date pushed back

CHICAGO (AP) — It appears former U.S. House speaker Dennis Hastert will be spending more time in prison than initially estimated.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports the Federal Bureau of Prison predicted Hastert would go free July 23, 2017. The agency recently pushed Hastert’s projected release date from Rochester Federal Medical Center back to Aug. 16, 2017 from July 23, 2017, potentially adding another 24 days.

Bureau of Prison spokesman Justin Long said the reason for the adjustment “is not public information,” and Hastert’s legal team declined to comment.

The 74-year-old Hastert is serving time for violating banking laws by trying to pay $3.5 million to silence a man who says he was abused by Hastert when the former speaker was a high school wrestling coach decades ago.
