Ten “statistical scholars” from around the country will come to Monmouth College this weekend for a workshop to discuss how statistics themselves are perceived.

The “Research on Statistics Attitudes” or ROSA workshop, will run from Friday through Sunday.

Monmouth mathematics and computer science professor Marjorie Bond is spearheading the gathering. In a news release she says, “The bad rap that statistics gets affects attitudes. People with bad attitudes towards statistics won’t use statistics.”

Bond has lead research on student perception and says results between 2007 and 2010 have shown that attitudes about stats are either staying the same or dropping.

Data compiled and analyzed, as well as seven of the workshop attendees, will head to Chicago on Sunday to share information.

The Joint Statistical Meetings taking place in the windy city are the largest gathering of statisticians in North America.
