The Galesburg Youth Commission will hold a “youth forum” next month with a number of local agencies in town.

Commission Chairman Sue Cunningham tells WGIL the purpose of the meeting will be to gather information about organizational issues and strengths.

“We’d like to see what the barriers are if their program isn’t doing as well as it could be,” Cunningham says, “what needs that they have that need to be met and if their program is running really successfully, we’d like to know what it is that they are doing. Maybe we can share ideas.”

Cunningham says she hopes the meeting will be attended by youth mentoring programs like Big Brothers Big Sisters, the YMCA and the city’s Parks and Recreation department.

When asked what barriers persist among local agencies, Cunningham says it widely varies.

“Maybe you have a great program, but you don’t have a way to communicate it out to the community,” Cunningham says. “Maybe it’s that you don’t have a way to get the kids to the program. Maybe it’s that you have a cost barrier.”

Cunningham adds that the forum is intended to use gathered information as a way for the community to help agencies in need.

The meeting is scheduled for August 3 from 1-3 p.m. at City Hall.
