More than 40 runners and 10 drivers will trek from Galesburg to Peoria Saturday in support of St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

The annual run is a relay type where runners move in two mile increments switching off at checkpoints throughout the event. Each Galesburg participant was asked to fund-raise $1,000. So far, nearly $30,000 has been raised out of the $78,000 goal.

Co-coordinator Heather Knicker organized this year’s event and inherited it from her father, Roger Myers. Myers started the event in 1984 with friends to help raise money for a young girl who was diagnosed with ALS.

When asked why she and countless others run and continue to run, Knicker tells WGIL it’s all to help children who need a little help.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of children in the area that we run for,” Knicker says. “Some people come specifically because of their own child or a niece or a nephew and have specific ties to one individual in particular. But then, they see the importance of running for all of the children and keep coming back year after year.”

Thirty-six other satellite runs will be stepping off around the country on Saturday as well. Galesburg runners will leave from just outside of our studios on Simmons Street at 6 a.m.
