Galesburg rocking a new outdoor game

Galesburg has been rocking as of late.
At least those that have been looking.

A new game has sprung off of social media and all over the Galesburg area in which people paint rocks and hide them.

Katie Nelson of Galesburg tells  WGIL the Galesburg Rocks Facebook page is a helpful key in finding rocks.

“You can either leave clues, or like hints, or like riddles,” Nelson says. “Some people just tell them where they hide them.”

Then it’s up to players to track down the rocks.

Once players find them they can rehide them or if a rock particularly catches a players eye they can keep it, but it’s considered good manners to make others aware on the group page.

Nelson has had fun playing with her two-year old son, Lincoln but says it’s great for all ages.

Samantha Estrada, who brought back the game from a visit to Marshfield, Missouri echoes Nelson’s feelings about the game being a family activity.

“Families are going and walking together,”Estrada says. “One of my friends last week, they walked over 10 miles with their family. It’s getting families out, getting families moving. Anyone can participate.”

So far, the Galesburg Rocks page has just under 3,000 members.

Estrada says she’s surprised it’s caught on so quickly but she’s heard nothing but positive feedback. She’s also heard of the game spreading to neighboring towns like Knoxville, Avon and Oneida.
