Rep. Don Moffitt has been recognized many times over his legislative career for his work with firefighters and fire protection districts.
Just this month two Moffitt sponsored bills regarding local fire protection districts were signed into law, including one Friday.

The Gilson Republican spoke on the House floor, saying the bill’s aim was to avoid forcing fire districts to absorb the responsibilities of a district that is dissolving, if they don’t have the resources to do so.

“If a municipal fire department is closed before it would be taken over by a fire protection district the trustees of the fire department district would have to approve it,” Moffitt says. “In other words they’d be taking on more responsibility.”

109 House members voted yes, 58 voted the same in the Senate and no lawmakers voted against.

Moffitt goes on to say that although it’s unlikely a fire department would dissolve without reaching an agreement for an alternative source of fire protection, it’s never before been required by law.

This comes just weeks after Rauner signed another Moffitt bill involving fire districts.

The Governor signed into law on Aug. 5 a measure that territories petitioning to disconnect from a fire protection district would be dismissed if it would cause the entire district a loss of property tax revenue of 25 percent or more.

Moffitt is the Republican spokesman for both Police & Fire as well as Counties and Townships committees.
