GHS Football to kickoff 2016 season

The Galesburg Silver Streaks varsity football team will begin the new season on Friday with a trip to Dunlap, where they will try to avenge a narrow loss to the Eagles that opened the 2015 season at Van Dyke Field.  It will be Galesburg’s first trip to Dunlap since a victory there in 2010.   GHS Head Coach Tim Dougherty enters his sixth season at the school with an overall record of 18-29, including a 4-5 mark last year.  The Streaks offense will be lead by returning quarterback Jacob Ross and running back DeAndre Moren, as well as tight end Jacob Carl and lineman Matt Ricketts.  Benny Castellano figures to anchor the defense, which will need to put pressure on Dunlap quarterback Harlan Mitchell in Friday’s opener.  Galesburg’s other non-conference games include the home opener with LaSalle-Peru next week, and a long trip to Marion the following Saturday afternoon.  The Streaks will finish the season with a tough task against powerful Peoria High.  As for the Western Big 6 Conference, it looks to be a balanced but not particularly strong league again this year.  The Big 6 is 0-6 in playoff games over the past two seasons.
