Chicago-area teacher makes rap video to welcome students

SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) — A 25-year-old who starts his first year as a student teacher this fall semester wrote a rap welcoming his fourth graders to school.

Dwayne Reed’s three-minute video was posted on YouTube this week and by Thursday morning had more than 363,000 views. Reed will teach at Stenson Elementary School in the Chicago suburb of Skokie. He tells the Chicago Tribune he made the video so students understand “the person that is going to be leading you this semester is so pumped about serving you.”

The video’s chorus has Reed singing, “Welcome to the fourth grade. So happy to meet you. Can’t wait till I see you. We’re gonna have a good time.”

Stenson Principal Sue O’Neil says the school encouraged Reed and she finds the video “uplifting and creative.”
