Students who take part in after school programs across the eight District 205 schools will now receive a hot meal and a snack five days a week, thanks to a non-profit who recently began work in the district.

The Quad Cities Area Food Program was implemented at the six elementary’s, August 15th. QCACFP Inspector Monitor Denise Yancy says both junior high’s and housing at Woodland Bend and Cedar Creek Place will begin to receive meals, September 6th.

Yancy tells WGIL the organization has also formed a partnership with First Christian Church.

“We are in partnership with them as far as using their facilities to use their kitchen,” Yancy says. “We cook everything for all of the sites and all of the schools, are coming out of First Christian Church.”

A site director, three food transporters and a cook have been hired by the company to handle food, locally. QCACFP runs similar programs all around the Quad Cities and is fully funded by the state.

Once all of the sites begin being served, Yancy anticipates the program will feed around 450 people each day.

“After I’ve seen how the Quad Cities area has grown, we’re up to about 50 sites,” Yancy says. “It has tremendously grown and I see it so much for Galesburg.”

The program officially began this year after working for 13 years with the Church of Peace in Rock Island. In 205, the program works in correlation with the YMCA Solutions Program, replacing the sole snack that kids used to receive.
