The National Weather Service’s Chris Miller says there were a few reports of funnel clouds yesterday in Knox County. The reports in particular came from north and northeast of Galesburg, but no funnels touched the ground.

Miller says there’s been an abundance of funnel reports this summer, due to above average rainfalls.

Funnels form out of the clouds and only become tornadoes if they touch down both the clouds and ground.

Storms that occurred Monday into Tuesday brought as much as 5 to 6 inches of rain in Victoria and closer to 1 to 2 inches in Wataga.

Miller tells WGIL recent storms have moved very slowly, resulting in the area where storms set up getting the brunt of showers.

“There are these storms that set up one particular area and drop all kinds of rainfall in a short period of time,” Miller say. “You look at down towards Knoxville and Abingdon and they barely got a half inch of rain, so it really varied significantly across the county.”

Fronts coming through the area later today Miller says should push out cold air, although expected rainfalls are well below what was experienced Monday.

Looking ahead to the fall, Miller says warmer than typical temps are expected.

A lot of times that indicates a colder, more snow covered winter which Miller says long range projections are predicting for Knox County.
