Knox College’s new and first Director of Spiritual Life says her history with social activism is a large part of what attracted her and Knox to each other.

Not being aware of Knox before applying for the job, Lisa Seiwert says she was “delighted” to see how much Knox’s values intersect with her own.

Despite her being an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ she tells WGIL she’s not interested in evangelizing to students.

“For me, it’s really important to honor all of those stories and journey’s and to create space and to help others create space for people to grow and become in the ways that feel authentic to each individual person,” Seiwert says.

She envisions her role supporting the Knox community in several ways.

That could mean drawing together different groups in crisis situations, creating service programming or simply holding one-on-one student meetings.

She says that she understands Knox as a campus does a good job of discussing differences in race, gender and sexual orientation.

But there hasn’t been someone to guide conversation around religious difference, something that she says we all “wear in one shape or form.”

Before coming to Knox, Seiwert was director of admission and recruitment at Chicago Theological Seminary since 2012.
