Knox County Habitat for Humanity is nearing a milestone and is also moving into the next stage of their work.

A ground breaking ceremony will be held tomorrow for their 51st home going in at the Ecklund Court sub-division.

The non-profit, who builds homes with volunteer support, has been working in the community since the early 1990’s to help prospective homeowners who may not have been able to afford a family home otherwise.

In April, Habitat celebrated their decades of success with the start of the 50th home build.

Habitat Executive Director Jordan Knight tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL that project is nearing its completion.

“We’ll be on to finish work this Saturday and October 29th and 11 a.m. we plan to dedicate that home,” Knight says.

Knight says the families for both the 50th and 51st houses were selected at the same time. Recipients work closely with each other and even help build each other’s homes through what Knight calls “sweat equity.”

“That 51st family has been waiting in the wings, but she’s been on site helping to build the 50th home,” Knight says. “They’re going to be neighbors for a long time now, so, those relationships are already being cultivated.”

April Douglass will be the homeowner of 51. The ceremony tomorrow is scheduled for 2 p.m.
