CHICAGO (AP) — Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced an improved health center at a Chicago public school funded in part by a city tax on e-cigarettes. Emanuel announced the center at John B. Drake Elementary School on Friday. It’s part of a pledge to use new city revenue to expand school-based health care through five such clinics by 2019.
The upgraded center at Drake will serve students from Drake and about 20 surrounding schools in the Bronzeville neighborhood. Emanuel says with the addition or improvement of five school-based centers, the city will reach more families in need of health care and address students’ problems that hinder learning.
The city has committed $2 million in new revenue from the tax on e-cigarettes for the health centers.
