Galesburg Kohl’s opens for business

A day that Galesburg shoppers have long waited for, and many thought might never come, arrived yesterday.

Kohl’s department store had a soft opening and now is open for business. An official grand opening with ribbon cutting will be held this Friday at 9:30 a.m.

Galesburg City Council approved a $1.58 million incentive package for Kohl’s in December to build the 36,000 sq. ft. facility.

The deal was similar to the one from 2012, when Kohl’s agreement to build a larger store was derailed.

Kohl’s is leasing the property from a private developer and part of the plan approved by aldermen was to develop two new retail spaces next to Kohl’s.

One of those will be a Pet Supplies Plus. A spokesman representing the company said that they plan to be open by October.

Ground broke in March and the project has moved quickly ever since.

When council approved the agreement, Mayor John Pritchard said he hoped they’d be open by mid-December 2016.

With yesterday’s soft opening it’s just over nine months since the agreement was passed.
