Carver Center investigation stagnant but continuing

It’s been roughly three weeks since the Carver Center saw severe fire damage from an intentionally set blaze.

Galesburg Fire Marshal Randy Hovind tells WGIL there are still no suspects, but officials aren’t ready to give up on the investigation.

“We know for sure that it was deliberately set, because there were multiple signs that pointed to it being deliberately set,”Hovind says. “Right now there are no new leads. We’re working in conjunction with the state fire marshal, the state police and local police.”

Police Capt. Rod Riggs says nearby camera footage has not produced any evidence. The fire was started in multiple parts of the facility, though fire officials have yet to determine if multiple culprits were involved.

As the investigation continues, Carver Center Executive Director Jeannie Shelton says insurance agents are continuing to assess damage, as well.

How much of the current facility will be able to be salvaged is unknown, but Shelton says arguably the most popular spot will go on.

“The gym is OK as it is,” Shelton says. “It’s just the other part of the building the way I understand it. I mean, there was some damage related to smoke.”

The Carver Center is used by the Boys and Girls Club. When the fire was set, the Carver Center was already undergoing renovations and children had been meeting at other locations around town.
