UPDATE: GHS to abbreviate Haunted High School event

***Retraction*** Galesburg High School Student Council Adviser Luan Statham confirmed finalized plans today that the school will hold its Haunted High School event in an abbreviated form. The event is designed for young kids to receive candy from student council volunteers. Based on incorrect information from the council, WGIL reported yesterday that a school wide version of the event would take place. Statham says the version taking place will be held to one front hallway by the front door of GHS. Children between the grades of Pre-Kindergarten to the 5th grade are invited to attend. The revised time for the event will be 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., October 27th.

Original story:

What was once a staple event of the season put on by the Galesburg High School’s student council is back this year.

Haunted High School at GHS may be back from the grave but Student Council Recording Secretary Hannah Hawkinson says scares and screams aren’t the goal.

Hawkinson says it’s designed to not be too scary for smaller children.

Kids will get to wander down GHS’ decorated halls and and get candy passed out by costumed students and staff.

She tells WGIL Student Council President Isaiah Harlan rekindled Haunted High School when he brought it up to the organization’s executive board.

“He asked the executive board if we remembered it and wanted to bring it back and we were like ‘aw yeah’,” Hawkinson says. “We could even remember why we stopped it but there’s no reason not to try it again. We always remembered it being fun so we thought we just might bring that back for the young children of the community.”

Hawkinson assures there will be faculty and a police liaison to ensure safety.

How many of the adults will be dressed up is anyone’s guess but Hawkinson thinks some of them will “play it up.”

She also makes a promise of no scary clown masks.

Visitors should come through the big doors at the front of the school for Haunted High School on Thursday Oct. 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
