The Knox County Board has put their budget on display for the next fiscal year and it’s balanced without a tax increase.

This year’s budget process has been considerably sunnier than last year.

At this time in 2015 there was a nearly $770,000 deficit in the general fund.

Treasurer Robin Davis reported for the end of September the general fund revenue is three percent more than expenses, with about $214,000.

She says as long as they “watch their bills” they should end the year in good shape.

Committee chair Greg “Chops” Bacon says measures such as more closely monitoring line item changes and having regular budget meetings aided greatly.

“One of the things we had done last year that caused us to lose a few hairs and get a little gray in our beards and stuff — it helped out this year,” Bacon told Finance Committee members at last night’s meeting. “We have a better understanding of it and we’re controlling the cost of it a little more.”

Bacon adds that it’s also nice to have some budgetary cushion, whereas before the board was “holding on by the skin of our teeth.”

The committee also approved putting their tentative tax levy on display.

Davis says the levy will generate $500,000 in additional revenue and it means tax payers will pay less. That’s because of an increase in Equalized Assessed Value that translates to less of a property tax burden.
