It’s been 25 years since the Galesburg High School football team hosted a home playoff game. With Saturday afternoon’s forecast of 78 degrees and sunny, the game will likely be a little different than 1991.

The GHS crazies will surely be in the stands for the first round match up against Chicago Hubbard, but in 91′, Streaks fans in attendance witnessed a game that is still talked about to this day.

The “Snow Bowl” pitted the 8-1 Streaks against the undefeated Joliet Catholic Hilltoppers led by future NFL Hall of Famer, Mike Alstott.

Former GHS head football coach Chris Stiles remembers the night fondly. He says the unending snow and cold certainly played a factor in the game.

“You know, that night we lost a couple of turnovers that led to their scores,” Stiles says. “But, it was a great game, it was a competitive game.”

The Hilltoppers went on to win 39-21 but Stiles says it doesn’t take away from a night that went down in Galesburg history.

“It was kind of meant to be that way and it was a great opportunity for our program and our community,” Stiles adds.

Stiles caught up with WGIL’s Tom Meredith today, who did play-by-play for that game. We’ll have the full interview with the coach tomorrow morning on Galesburg’s Morning News.
