A one and a half story residence built in the late 1880’s saw moderate structure damage and smoke damage throughout, following an early morning fire, today.

Galesburg Fire Chief Tom Simkins says fire crews responded just before 1 a.m. to a structure fire at 226 W. North St.

The house is split into two apartments. A man downstairs and a couple upstairs both got out safely.

Simkins says flames showed out of the backside of the house on the first and second floors. Smoke could be seen pouring out of the eaves of the building, as well.

Fire crews were able to extinguish the majority of the blaze in about 15 minutes, but fire extending into the wall and attic took more than an hour to fully put out.

A cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
