The Knox County Humane Society’s Holiday Cheerfest for Pets brought in $6,000 to benefit the no-kill shelter last year and they’re hoping to do it again tonight. The fundraiser is a beer and wine tasting with a cavalcade of prizes to boot from 6 to 9 p.m.

This evening the event costs $10 at the door but KCHS’ Volunteer Director Erin Buckmaster says that’s a good price considering it consists of a night out as well as a chance to nab some gifts with various silent and live auctions.

One of the live auctions items is a package from the host, Iron Spike.

The package valued at $400 includes three hours for a group of four on Iron Spike’s new golf simulator, dinner for four, a brewery tour, shirts and pints glasses as well four growlers of Iron Spike beer.

“We just have a lot of nice prizes so you just can’t lose by coming and you’re going to help the shelter,” Buckmaster says. “And I tell you, it’s so much fun. It really is. It’s really great the way people support the shelter the way they do.”

Tickets have been available but anyone can also purchase them at the door tonight.

The shelter’s cost are beyond what most might realize says Buckmaster.

They pay about $1,500 in power bills, have three vehicles running constantly, pay vets bills and have staff to pay.

All told Buckmaster says it cost about $400,000 to run the shelter.

Also she adds that this time of year the KCHS is always in need of blankets and towels.

If residents have any blankets they are planning on throwing away, they’ll gladly be accepted at the shelter.
