2 iron lions that sit outside Kankakee library get makeover

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) — Two 146-year-old lion statues that sit in front of the Kankakee Public Library are undergoing restoration work.

The iron lions named Readmore and Seemore are undergoing work at K&S Welding in Kankakee. Library director Steve Bertrand says they’re expected to return to the library’s entrance next week.

Bertrand says finishes on both lions were stripped, cracks were filled and the lions will each get a fresh black coat. One of the lions needs more work because its paw is broken.

The lions last got a makeover in 2004 when they were moved from a former library location to their new home. The lions date back to a Chicago department store in 1871. They became part of the Kankakee library in January 1930.
