Johnsburg buys 100-acre golf course for $1.1 million

JOHNSBURG, Ill. (AP) — The northern Illinois community of Johnsburg has purchased a 100-acre golf course for $1.1 million.

The Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake reports the village plans to annex the unincorporated Chapel High Golf Course. The village will begin cleaning up the property and removing dead trees when ground conditions permit.

Village officials announced in September they signed a contract to buy the property. The deal came after a developer proposed a residential development on the site near the Fox River, about 60 miles northwest of Chicago.

Village President Edwin Hettermann says Johnsburg wants to “preserve this important recreational open space located at a key entrance” to the community. He says the goal is to provide a well maintained, affordable golf course to residents.

Johnsburg plans to lease the golf course to an operator.
