Illinois hunters were quite busy during the two weekends this year that made up the firearm deer hunting season.

Preliminary numbers released by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources indicate that over 80,000 deer were harvested during the two weekends this year.

Ed Cross with the IDNR says that one of the big contributing factors to the numbers was mother nature.

In Knox County, 448 deer were taken by hunters in the final weekend – combining for a total of 1,145. That’s down from 1,200 the previous year, a bout 5.4%.

Fulton County had the largest numbers for deer harvested with 1,997 while Warren County only saw 548.

Henry County saw hunters nab 538 deer, while Mercer County had 833, and McDonough County 830.

Stark County had the lowest numbers in the area with only 199 deer taken.
